When the word Samadeepa was first used in Jaffna, subsequently war torn northern city as the name of a magazine published by the Jaffna Secretariat Buddhist Association in 1973 it was mentioned that it would bring the message of peace and brotherhood to the people of Sri Lanka.
During the period of inception samadeepa’s theme was expressed as follows.
“ Where there is no exploitation of man by man and there is no suppression of man by man there will be true peace. We stand by such a land of perfect peace, a Samadeepa. Our conscience is clear. We will succeed."
We can never achieve peace unless we have good governance. Peace everywhere can be disturbed by a single incidence of violence anywhere. A whole system can easily be ruined by a single incidence of corruption taking place in a secret place somewhere.
Accordingly, the concept of peace in Samadeepa is not a passive one but a process that should be actively supported by all the citizens. Country suffered a war of 30 years. Many things have changed or have been changed. But, Samadeepa’s clear stand for peace and good governance remains unchanged.
