LOCAL RECOGNITION

Founder of Samadeepa is a social development worker with experience of more than 40 years. He founded Samadeepa Samaja Kendraya in 1980 It was registered with the Department of Social services in Sri Lanka under No. Anu /1/82 of 04/10/82 and again under No. 0095 of 04.05.1994.  It was incorporated by Act No. 23 of 1992 by the Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Samadeepa received higher level of state recognition receiving registration certificate No. L 143916 of 02.09.2011 from the National NGO Secretariat operating under the Ministry of Defence. He is responsible for establishment of nearly 200 community based and Non Governmental Organizations in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.  He is also the founder of Action Group for Social Development (AGSOD) which is working with an island-wide coverage with special emphasis on the North Central Province. He founded the Peoples Assembly of Sri Lanka (PASL) which is promoting good governance at different levels in different sectors in all parts of the country.

Around 100 organizations have joined the Peoples Assembly representing all nine provinces. Around 600 organizations have expressed their willingness to support the Peoples Assembly and more that 15000 people belonging to different sectors such as religious institutions, political parties, business community, trade unions and farmer organizations have also expressed solidarity with the Peoples Assembly. With this network of organizations the programme will definitely succeed promoting its cherished vision, a world where democracy will flourish with good governance, transparency, accountability, social responsibility, human rights and rule of law.

Samadeepa has been associated with international agencies since 1984. The first organization that came forward to give a helping hand was Community Aid Abroad, Australian counterpart of OXFAM. The following table shows its association with international agencies and diplomatic missions.

International Council on Social Welfare - ICSW

As far back as 1996 Samadeepa joined International Council on Social Welfare (ICSW). Since then it was a very active member of  ICSW.

Founder of Samadeepa held the position of regional president for Central and South Asia since 2004. After completing his 2 two year terms, in June 2008 Mr. Charles Jayasinghe representing Samadeepa was elected Regional President for South Asia and undertook to continue with the programme initiated by his predecessor. Samadeepa is very much thankful to ICSW for the international exposure it received through the network. Samadeepa remained an active member of the ICSW for a period of 15 years ( 1996 - 2010 ) then it was able to support National Peace Council to become the national member for Sri Lanka.

World Association of Non Governmental Organizations - WANGO
Samadeepa played the key role in establishing the Sri Lanka Chapter of World Association for Non Governmental Organizations (WANGO) in 2004. Founder of Samadeepa was appointed by WANGO as its national representative in Sri Lanka. Most of the people holding high positions in WANGO Sri Lanka chapter are civil society leaders came up through community based and Non-Governmental organizations initiated or supported by Samadeepa.
